When Derek Southouse and his cousin Mervyn started the business carrying out pipe laying contracts in south east England in 1966 they did not dream that their initial labours would grow into a major surfacing, driveway and civil engineering company.

Forty years on it has become Hailsham Roadway Construction Co Ltd, with new premises and offices just off the A22 at Hailsham, and a staff of 75 local skilled people. The business is now overseen by Managing Director Michael Southouse - Dereks' son, with a turnover in excess of £4 million per year. Mervyn left the company in 1987, Derek still retains the Chairman position but is aiming to retire on the companies 40th anniversary in September 2006. Other family connections continue with Mervyns son Colin having worked as an estimator and sales manager since 1994.

The company carries out a wide variety of surfacing (both major & minor), specialising in macadam, asphalt & block paving. We also carry out major civil engineering schemes, such as sewer connections and estate infrastructure installation. Our prestigious client base includes Mr & Mrs Jo Public, Lords & Ladies, Members of Parliament, World champion, Sporting legends, Rock Stars, Corporate Clients (such as Tesco, Morrisons & Gardner Books), Local Authorities and Schools.

Recently the company has also invested in a subsidiary company, to provide high quality, mixed on site concrete. The Cementech Mobile Concrete Dispensers used by HRC Concrete Ltd are ideal for the trade or DIY, as they only mix what is needed on the site. This has obvious complimentary benefits to Hailsham Roadway but is proving popular with many local builders and the general public.
